Purab
Aur Paschim (1970)
Purab Aur Paschim is an Indian patriotic film cast,
produced and directed by Manoj Kumar in 1970. The film is starred by Manoj
Kumar, Saira Banu Ashok Kumar, Pran and prem Chopra in the lead roles. But other
supporting characters also have played their roles importantly. Manoj Kumar has
played his role as Bharat in four films for example,Upkar (1967), Purab Aur
Paschim (1970), Roti Kapda Aur Makaam (1974) and Kranti (1981). All the films
are patriotic. Hindi film Namastey London (2007) and Indian Bengali film Paran Jai Jaliya Re (2009) are also made based on this film story.
Story:
During the British rule in India, a traitor assists
to kill a freedom fighter and dwells in Britain. But after a long time, the
freedom fighter’s son persuades his others relatives that India is the country
where relationships, humanity, religion and culture are followed to create an
inner bond among them.
Personal Analysis:
Purab Aur Paschim is a patriotic film. But it is
also a romantic film. But the film has kept its importance in patriotism. Manoj
Kumar and Saira Banu as the hero and the heroine have played their lead roles. But
other’s supporting roles have made it most meaningful as a patriotic film. The film
actually has tried to show two countries’ relational difference. A country
honors to all’s relationship and humanity. But other country is totally
opposite to the first attributed here. For example, Saira Banu as Preeti a
young daughter living in Britain, but has left all religious rules, norms and
values. On the other hand Manoj Kumar as Bharat gets religious education from
his widow mother and Guru and visits London to achieve higher education too. I
don’t want to share the plot here. But for the purpose of the review, I have to
note something from the film’s plot. The story of the film is a unique and a
patriotic one. It is released in 1970. So, there is no need to share bout its
cinematography. Actually, the film has given importance on its narrative or the
story. So, I think the cinematography is not more important here. Background music
is attractive. It is English and Hindi language film. So, film’s dialogues are also
important. Excessive dialogues but these help to create a meaningful story. Where
there is lack of cinematography, dialogue is the heart of the film. So, its
main contribution is its dialogue. But performance is also very important.
Everyone has tried to their best to give a natural acting, natural dialogues. So,
performance and dialogues are the two things that create it most attractive to
the audiences. But Manuj Kumar’s performance and a patriotic story are the main
things too. Use of graphics is very rear. It tries to uphold the reality and
naturalism. But its editing style is normal. No extra elements have been used
to make it gorgeous rather it tries to uphold the naturalism or reality. But
sometimes it seems there are excessive performances that are called overacting.
But sometimes, melodramatic scenes have lessened its overacting. Thus, director
has upheld the reality through normal editing style. Specially, in the sense of the film story, the
film is an excellent one. But it seems it is a vast film story would be
sometimes boring but an interesting story. And performance will keep you in a
melodramatic thinking.
