Still then, no war was in that town. Malena’s husband was in force in Africa and fought the British. So, Malena is alone in the house. But she becomes the cause of lust of all the men and the women envy her as she is very beautiful, especially her eyes are very erotic. She looks a bit her father, a professor. Renato notices two German soldiers taking her and other woman to hotels. He faints there. His mother thinks demon is into his body. So, he is taken for exorcism. But his father takes him to the brothels. He does physical ecstatic relation with Malena as the initiative. But when the Americans occupy the town, the women of the town pull in out of the hotel and rip off her clothes and begin persecution on her, cut off her hairs.

She moves in Messina by train. Once Nino Scordia, Maena’s husband comes back home. But the occupier in his house and others do not tell anything about Malena. Renato sends him an anonymous letter that she loves him still now, she is not a prostitute. The villagers have made her that. She moves Messina. After one year, Nino Scordia and Malena together stroll in the town. The women and the men notice that she is more matronly and plain than before. She looks enigmatic more. The women oppressed on her, respect her now and say good morning madam in the market while shopping.
Malena replies them. At the road, some potatoes fall in the road, Renato helps her lifting them. He says ‘good luck, Malena Scordia’. This is the first time; Malena looked at someone and gives him an enigmatic half-smile.

Renato says’ "Time has passed and I have loved many women. And as they've held me close... and asked if I will remember them, I've said, "Yes, I will remember you." But the only one I've never forgotten is the one who never asked..."
"Malèna"

Male Gaze:
Laura Mulvey’s (1975) essay ‘Visual pleasure and narrative cinema’ is the classical statement on popular film from the perspective of feminist psychoanalysis. A political weapon in a cinema is patriarchal society’s political psychoanalysis. Laura Mulvey calls the thing is ‘Male gaze’. Male gaze is the female is the object of male desire and she is the signifier of the threat of castration. She describes another term ‘schopophilia’ that means the pleasure of looking. Scopophilia is sexual; using another person as an object of sexual stimulation through sight. But in world structured by ‘sexual imbalance’ the pleasure of the gaze has been separated into two distinct positions: men look and women exhibit (to-be-looked-at-ness), both are playing to male desire and signifying. In the film Malena is the object of visual pleasure to the male and female. She exhibits her in the camera, to the active performer and the audiences. ‘When the heroine removes her clothes, it is for the sexual gaze of both the hero in the narrative and the spectator in the auditorium.’ In the film the patriarchal society takes Malena’s body as the sexual object and gets visual pleasure. But it is sexual pleasure. The women envy her beauty and voice. As they say her voice is god’s voice and her beauty is god gifted. Her eyes are erotic which can give pleasure any male person. But in the film the women have also watched Malena on the male gaze. Cause the director has wanted to show her body on the perspective of patriarchal society. And the active women also cannot come out from it (male gaze). So, they also watch her similarly with male person.

Giuseppe Sulfaro and his girlfriend and others in Malena (2000) Movie

Voyeurism:
It is concept of Sigmund Freud. It is also linked with scopophilic instinct. Scopophilia means the pleasure of looking. Female exhibit and men look. But scopophilia is sexual. Cause, man gets erotic pleasure looking the women’s body. As she is the sexual object in the film, we connect it with Renato. As she looks malena’s sexual activity, gets sexual pleasure. Voyeurism means deriving pleasure by watching others having sex. It can be spectator but in the movie Renato is active performer who derives sexual pleasure of Malena and lawyer or soldier.
Politics:
In the film there has been power practice by the patriarchal capitalist society. It was the time of Second World War. So, there, we notice the change of occupation. At first the Germans occupy the town Sicily but in the last of the movie Americans occupy the town. At the time of German occupation, the men take sexual pleasure, someone rapes, and force and stop providing food, and do physical relation in the hotel and the women envy her beauty, her voice her everything. But at time of American occupation the women oppress and do persecution on her. So, she cannot tolerate and moves away in Messina. The patriarchal society forces her to be prostitute. They stop her food. Penniless Malena’s last resort was hotel for livelihood. But the women started oppression and persecution on him to leave the town.

Nostalgic Evocation:
It is the fundamental point of the film. Strolling of Malena and her husband to the town surprises the men and the women who oppressed on her. Love to one’s land or town is eternal. She tolerates a lot of oppression from the residents of the town. But she has never lost her courage. Malena is a very simple story. It has something drama comedy and erotic scenes. But its erotic activities and nostalgic evocation made the film an international recognition and commercial advantages.

Monica Bellucci looks at Giuseppe Sulfaro in Malena (2000) Movie

In a short, a woman is punished for her beauty. She is oppressed by the other women from the envy of her beauty. It is a very simple story about romance, comedy and tragedy. Its best score and best cinematography are the most valuable contribution. In a word, it a great work of Giuseppe Tornatore.

Miracle in Milan (1951) Italian Film Review

Miracle in Milan (1951) Italian Film Review

Miracle in Milan (1951) movie directed by Vittorio De Sica. One of the great films Miracle in Milan (1951) is an Italian fantasy (magical) film directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1951. A great filmmaker only can make a great film. I love it greatly. Because the idea of magical thing in 1951 is incredible. My rating is always 10/10. I have seen such a great film after a long time. Specially, Vittorio De Sica is one of the great filmmakers to me. But I didn't think such a good film he will make. There are some special scenes that are very important to me. These are; when all the people are busy with their dreams and tell to Toto for their demands. He is fulfilling the demands of the people but his lover or his dream Edvige is outside. She is staying outside but can't speak anything to her only lover or dream man. He is getting sorrow. At the last scene when they all are going or flying; Edvige is seated behind Toto. At last their dream was turned into reality. Everyone saw it. It was also the best scene to me. However, one word is very important that Freedom is easy but its respect is difficult to hold. Pigeon is such kind of freedom. It should be kept in private place and should control it for a better and happy life.

Stromboli (1950) Italian American Film Review

Stromboli (1950) Italian American Film Review

Stromboli (1950) directed by Roberto Rossellini. One of the great films to me. Stromboli (1950) is also known as Stromboli, Land of God. Italian title is Stromboli, terra di Dio is directed by Roberto Rossellini. Roberto Rossellini's film is very powerful. So, I don't want to review more. His work makes his film great. And he is one of the great filmmaker of the world. I am agreed with that 'Stromboli' one of his great works. At first I thought it is a fiction film but at the last few scenes make me to change my mind. I knew that it is a non fiction film. Roberto Rossellini captured some scenes of fishing that are nonfiction and real. So it is fiction and non-fiction both of them. I like it very much. It is also an example of Italian New realism.

The Battle of Algiers (1966)_Film Review

The Battle of Algiers (1966)_Film Review

The Battle of Algiers is an Italian-Algerian historical war film co-written and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo in 1966. The film is starred by Jean martin, Sadi Yacef and many others. It is based on the events by rebels during the Algerian war from 1954 to 1962 against the French government in North Africa. It was shot on location of Algeria. Music was composed by Ennio Morricone. It was shot in a Roberto Rossellini inspired reel style in black and white and in documentary type style to add to its sense of historical authenticity. It is associated with Italian neo-realism cinema. Story: The story of the film is taken from the book ‘Souvenirs de la Bataille d`Alger’ written by Sadi Yacef. Sadi Yacef was also co-producer of the film and acted in this film as FLN (National Liberation Front) commander. The film is about Algerian liberation war against the French government. Plot: The film reconstructs the revolutionary events that occurred in the capital city of French Algeria between November 1954 and December 1957, during the Algerian war of Independence. The story starts with the organization of revolutionary cells in the Casbah. Director Pontecorvo and co-writer of the screenplay Franco Solinas created several protagonists in their screenplay, who are based on historical war figures. For example; FLN commander EL-Hadi Jafar, role played by Sadi Yacef who was a veteran FLN commander. Lieutenant Colonel Mathieu the paratroop commander is the principal French character. Other characters are the boy Petit Omar, a Street Urchin who is an FLN messenger, Larbi Ben M’hidi, a top FLN leader who provides the political rationale for the insurgency and Djamila, Zohra, Hassiba the FLN women urban guerrillas who carry out a terrorist attack. “How to win a battle against terrorism and lose the war of ideas; Children shoot soldiers at point blank range. Women plant bombs in cafes; soon the entire Arab population builds to a mad fervor. Sound familiar? The French have a plan. It succeeds tactically but fails strategically. To understand why, come to a rare showing of this film.” Cinematography: Pontecorvo’s one of the best friends Marcello Gatti was the cinematographer of the film. Shooting location was in Casbah, Algeria. Cinematographer filmed in black and white and experimented with various techniques to give the film the look of newreel and documentary film. To know about cinematography style of the film, we have to describe its shot variations, mise-en-scene and lighting. Shot: Several times handheld camera has been used in this film. There is variation in shot divisions. For example; wide angle shot, long shot, medium shot, close up shot and extreme close up shot have been used in this film. Mise-en-scene: Most of the times of the film duration, it is noticed that most of the scenes are taken in outdoor. The arrangement of the scenes and props are made in a very artistic way but it looks very natural. As it is a documentary type film, the arrangement of the props is seemed like the situation or condition of the props is very natural or seems realistic. Good framing, shot divisions and scenes arrangement are realistic and natural in this film. Lighting: The film is shot based on Italian neo-realism style. It is captured totally in outdoor shooting. But artificial light is also used in this film. Most of the scenes of the film natural light has been used in this film. But for the indoor shooting artificial lighting has been used precisely. Acting: It is a documentary style film directed in 1966. According to the cinematography acting is very natural in this film. For example; acting of Jean Martin, Saadi Yacef, Brahim Haggiag, Tommaso Neri and some others is very natural and seems it is realistic. It is like documentary style film to all. Sound and Music: Sound and music is composed by both Ennio Morricone and Gillo Pontecorvo. For example; latter the background music of rifles, bombs and pistols has been composed according to the scenes. Editing: Editing style is marvelous in this film. Before, I have described that it’s a documentary style film. The audiences generally like this kind of editing style. I mean shot variations are inevitable. Besides different kinds of angles and emerging the scenes are also important. The film is edited by both Mario Morra and Mario Serandrei. It is artistic editing style. Their editing style or techniques are very important in this film.
