Mohammed Yusuf Khan,
specially, known by his stage name as Dilip Kumar who was an Indian film actor and
producer. He was born on 11th December, 1922, in Peshawar, former
North-West Frontier Province, British India, now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. He
has led his 5 decades in cinema. But he never took his birth name in cinema and
adopted name as Dilip Kumar out of fear his father. Actually his debuting film was
Jwar Bhata (1944) starred by him taking his name as Dilip Kumar. In fact,
Devika Rani one of the producers of Jwar Bhata (1944) suggested
the name Dilip Kumar. And from then he had received the name Dilip Kumar. From 1944
to 1998, he acted over 65 cinemas in his whole life. His first acted cinema was
Jwar Bhata (1944) and the last film was Qila (1998) though his
two films Aag Ka Dariya (1990) and Kalinga (1996) still remained
unreleased. He was known as ‘Tragedy King’ for his ill-fated
characterization in Devdas (1955). His Mughal-E-Azam (1960) was
the most successful and became highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
Raj Kapoor was his childhood friend. Actually, Dilip
Kumar and his family had a close and strong relationship with the Kapoor
family. Dilip Kumar and Madhubala loved each other during the shooting of Tarana
(1951). But their relationship lasted for seven years and after Naya
Daur Court case their relationship was ended forever. They never acted
together after acting in Mughal-E-Azam (1960). After that audiences had watched
the chemistry of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in Gunga Jumna (1961). Dilip
Kumar married the actress Saira Banu in 1966 who was 22 years younger than him.
In 1972, Saira Banu has conceived but there was complication in the pregnancy
that led the child’s death. After that, they did not try to have children again.
They believed that it would be God’s will, according to the autobiography of Dilip
Kumar:The Substance and the Shadow. Dilip Kumar married Hyderabad Socialite
Asma Sahiba as his second wife in 1981. But unfortunately, their marriage ended
in 1983.
Dilip Kumar had received many national and
international awards in his whole life for the contribution to film and others.
For example; Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, NTR National Award in 1997, Padma
Vibhushan Award in Arts, Padma Bhushan Award in 1991, Filmfare Award for Best
Actor in 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1965, 1968 and 1983 and Filmfare
Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. Dilip Kumar was a member of the Rajya sabha
from 2000 to 2006.
Dilip Kumar died by Prostate Cancer on 7th
July, 2021, at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. The Government of Maharashtra approved
his burial with state honors at Juhu Muslim Cemetery.
