Cinematography:
Springtime in a Small Town takes the return of Tian
Zhuanzhuang to the director’s chair following a nearly nine year absence since
his last film ‘The Blue Kite (1993)’. Springtime’s scenery and props
arrangement and making style is different from the contemporary Chinese films.
It’s a female melodramatic film where director has shown female character
strong and male character as weak. Pin Bing Lee is the cinematographer of the
film. The main characteristics of cinematography are; shot division, mise-en-scene
and lighting. To know about its cinematography, we have to describe the
characteristics.
Shots:
Shot division or shot variation is also an
important cinematic style. Various kinds of shots, like close up shots, medium
shots, wide angle shots have been used in this film precisely.
Mise-en-scene:
Scenery and props arrangement of a film is called
mise-en-scene. Set design is of 1940s of this film. So, the props are also of
at that time. Costume is Chinese traditional. Make up is traditional.
Lighting:
Natural and artificial light have been used in this
film. But most of the time sunny or natural light is used strongly.
Acting:
Another very important cinematic style is
expression or gesture or acting. It is a melodramatic film. Acting f the
characters is very emotional. Sometimes there is natural or realistic acting in
this film.

Sound and Music:
Music is composed by Zhao Li. Actually background
music is hardly used in this film. But the background music is very natural and
emotional that is called melodramatic.
Editing:
The film is edited by Xu Jianping. Editing style is
like the melodramatic style. But the style resembles with the cinematic style
of the famous film ‘In the Mood for Love’ (2000). In fact, background music is
hardly used in this film. it is edited in realistic way. There is no special
effect or gfx or vfx. Springtime is very natural editing. Assembling of the
scenes and the background music is aesthetically authentic.
