Masud
Rana is an action
thriller Bengali language film directed by Masud Parvez Sohel Rana in 1974.
Sohel Rana has also produced and starred in this film. Its production work is
started in 1973. Then Sohel Rana acted in Masud Rana film playing the role of
the hero of the film. Since then he has taken the name Masud Rana for his stage
name. Mostly, He has been known in Dhallywood film industry as Masud Rana. He
acted over 200 Bengali films.
Plot
Summary
Masud Rana
is a manager of the Bangladesh International Trading Corporation, Dhaka. He
visits to Cox’s Bazaar in office holidays for vacation. He gets in the hotel of
Thirugonosompondomuthiuniner Pillai. Masud Rana fights with Birbardhan for
harassing a woman, Lina, Pillai’s wife and gets him out of the restaurant. But
he did not know that Birbardhan is the activist of gangster Raghunath Sardar.
Raghunath Sardar is the most powerful gangster there. Pillai and Lina tell
Masud Rana to stay there house and they will find a bride for him. Suddenly
Bighnoraj comes to Masud to rescue him from Raghunath Sardar. Raghunath bets
against Bighnoraj 10 lac Taka in wresting. Masud Rana is agreed to wrestle for
Bighnoraj with Hambantota the wrestler of Raghunath Sardar. But Raghunath warns
Masud not to win in the wrestling otherwise he will be killed. But Masud Rana
wins in the wrestling. A couple Kumar Samiji and Rita were enjoying the
wrestling at the stadium. Rita starts to like Masud for his wresting skills.
After a while she can know that Raghunath wants to kill him. So she and her
husband rescue him and are going to take him to their casino house but Kumar is
dead by road accident. Masud and Rita are alive but Masud loses his former
memory and go to the Golden casino. Kumar was the owner of the 5 world famous
casinos. It is one of them. But Rita is tempted to be the owner of those. So
since then she starts conspiracy. But Kumar gave his all properties to his own
daughter Subita before dying. Mr. Hulugal can know the real identity of Masud
Rana from Raghunath over phone. So, Rita kills the manager Hulugal. She makes
Masud the new manager and gives his name Notoraj Hikka so that the police
cannot identify the truth. Besides, the police inspector Bijoy Sena Nayek is
very tempted on money. So he releases any cases for money. Masud has no former
memories and Rita uses him on her own way and does not tell his real identity.
One day Masud visits the sea banks and finds Subita. She everyday comes near
the bank and draws her arts. Slowly they start to love each other. One day
suddenly, real Notoraj Hikka comes at the Golden casino. Rita manages all the
matters. She names Notoraj Hikka to Nagraj Hikka, Notoraj’s elder brother. Rita
wants Masud to be her player and if anyone comes between them, she will kill her.
One day Rita can know that Masud loves Subita Kumar’s former daughter. So she
starts conspiracy with Masud and after coming from Ratnapur, she will make
Notoraj the new manager. Knowing her conspiracy, Masud transfers Kumar’s money.
Masud plans to take Subita to Dhaka but he causes an accident and gets back the
former memories of his first accident. But he cannot remember the medium
memories of the two accidents. At last he can remember Subita’s song when a
singer was singing the same song. Mr.
Notoraj Hikka’s gangsters lift Subita. Hikka warns Masud to give Kumar’s money
to him otherwise he will rape Subita with his gangsters. But Masud shoots Hikka
and rescues Subita.

Sohel Rana starred, produced and simultaneously directed this film. It is an
action thriller film. In 1970s, there are some classical films which are
dramatic or comedy or tragic. But Masud Rana (1974) is one of the best action

Story and
Screenplay
Actually,
Masud Rana is fictional character originated in 1966 by the great writer Qazi
Anwar Hussain. Qazi Anwar Hussain is a famous writer of Bangladesh. Specially,
he is famous for his Masud Rana Character. There have been written over 450
series under Masud Rana character. Still now, this kind of series is published
under Sheba Prokashoni, Bangladesh. It is like Ian Fleming’s Zames Bond series.
Masud Rana film is created based on the story titled ‘’Bishmaron’’ (Amnesia).
It is the 11th story of the series and was first published in 1967.
Qazi Anwar Hussain wrote the dialogue, screenplay from his novel. It is a great
story.
Sound and
Music
There is a
famous song in this film titled “Monero Ronge Rangabo, Bonero Ghum Bhangabo’’.
The famous playback singer Selina Azad sang the song for the film. Azad Rahman
the lyricist played an important role in music department. Besides, the whole
background sound of the film is like it is a spy thriller. It is the main role
of the film. The background sound helped the film to understand it at easy way
and become more meaningful.
Lighting
There are
some night scenes in the film. Camera does not see anything without light. So, in
the night scenes, the director has used lighting in the film. It helped to
create meaningful shape and model of the subject. It creates shadow which helps
to make shape for the subject too.

There are
some locations where the whole film was captured. T.S.C, University of Dhaka
and Atomic Energy Commission, Dhaka and the last place is Cox’s Bazaar,
Bangladesh. But most of the scenes of the film are shot in Cox’s Bazaar.

Cinematography
The
cinematography of the film consists of the lighting system, the camera works,
the framing, taking shots in different and creative angles. Camera operation of
the film is suitable for the film like as an action thriller film. There are
verities within the shots. There are different kinds of shots which help the
audiences to attract them. The use of light is very good. The framing of the
scenes are very creative. It looks like it was the golden time for the Bengali
film.
Make up
and Costume
Selection of
costumes for the artists is very difficult work. But the Director Masud Rana
has chosen the costumes in a very creative way. For examples, the dresses of
the casino dancers, the dress of the wrestlers, the dress of police officer
according to his designation and other artist’s dresses and make up.

plan can make a film good to the audiences ‘Masud Rana’ is also like that. The
editing system of the film is another achievement for the director. In which
way a director want his film to show to the audiences, an editor has to do in
